Why I Chose It

I chose this phone for several reasons.  The first being, it’s on the Verizon Network. Verizon and AT&T have the best coverage in remote and rural locations.

The second reason was, it has the ability to become a mobile hotspot.  So, I don’t need to buy any additional hardware to create a Wifi network to tether my laptop and tablet to.  It also has an enormous 3,900 mAh battery which should come in handy in the backcountry as well as quick charge capability.

Thoughts After Using

Loved the big battery on this thing.  The mobile hotspot feature was also terrific.  Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of photos this thing took as well.

The only problem I had was finding coverage in some places.  I think before I head out next time I’m going to look into getting a signal booster.

Why I Chose It

Initially, I bought this camera to record remote viewing experiments.  I had a Canon Digital Elph when I was in school and thought the optics were pretty good.

I’m far from being a professional videographer/photographer, so hopefully this camera will be a good one to learn on before spending hundreds more on a DSLR.  It came in a bundle from Costco with travel bag and memory card.

Thoughts After Using

Was very impressed with the functions of this camcorder.  Thought it also did a good job as a dash cam even without having a proper mount to stabilize it.

Good battery life.  One thing I need to do more research on his how to share bigger sized videos.  I mostly uploaded to Youtube as 720p to keep file size down, but I don’t think that level of quality represented my material the best.

Why I Chose It

I really didn’t want to be a guy that owned a selfie stick, but I guess I am now.  I didn’t go looking for a selfie stick though.

Originally, I was just looking for an adapter for my tripod to mount the Droid Turbo, but those mounts were as much as this entire monopod.  I found it on Ebay for $11.  The tripods I got from Amazon.

Thoughts After Using

I used this a lot more than I thought I would.  One of the ways was to get shots from high up when attached to a regular tripod.

It also held the camera when I did some filming while hiking.  And then lastly, I used it how I originally intended as a mount for my phone when recording video with it.

Why I Chose It

When I started doing a lot of reading after my near death experience, this is what I chose as an e-reader.  It’s a little expensive compared to a Kindle or other tablets, but I like that the iPad can display PDF in a wider ratio for less scrolling.

I’ve also come to use the camera and video recording, especially the slo-mo mode I think is really good at 120 fps.

Thoughts After Using

When I first set out it took me about 3 weeks to get over the shock of my new lifestyle so I didn’t do much reading then.  And actually, I think it took me closer to 3 months before I felt comfortable.

I did do a fair bit of reading though.  A couple new books and also re-reading and studying some older ones.

Why I Chose It

This mount works for both the iPad and my old phone the Google Nexus 4 before I had the Droid Turbo.

I have two tripods in case I can ever figure out how to use another camera besides the Canon at the same time.

Thoughts After Using

Well, I did attempt to do some multi-camera filming, but it was sort of a disaster.  I was having a hard enough time as it was with just 1 camera, so I just gave it up rather quickly.  Maybe I’ll give it another shot next time.

Why I Chose It

This can charge the iPad 1-2 times and the Droid Turbo around 4 times.  I hardly ever let my devices drain to zero so I should get at least several days use out of this even when backpacking.

This has quick charging and so does the Droid Turbo.  I also picked up a car charger that has a quick charge port.

Thoughts After Using

As mentioned elsewhere, I didn’t get a chance to do any overnight hiking which this was specifically purchased for.

However, this did come in handy for charging stuff in my tent when hiding out from inclement weather.  I also loaned it to fellow campers who needed a charge.

Why I Chose It

I needed a laptop that could handle the video editing I wanted to do.  I’ve built two desktops before with MSI motherboards and never had any problems.

I couldn’t wait for the laptops with the new graphics cards because I was getting ready to leave.  I found this as an open box heavily discounted on jet.com.  It appeared new when I received it.  The battery is a weak point.

Thoughts After Using

Was a little worried because this isn’t advertised as a “rugged” or “tough” outdoor laptop.  A couple minor things have gone wrong, but hard to tell why because it was an open box.

The headphone jack gets a little sensitive at times and also the touchpad went a little glitchy. I use a regular mouse so no big deal there.  The headphone seems to respond best halfway plugged in.  Battery life is very poor.

Why I Chose It

I’ve had these headphones for a few years and really like them.  I originally bought them just for music, movies and games, but they should be good for monitoring audio during podcasts and video production.

Before I was using a $20 pair from Monoprice.  They were good for the money, but the quality is noticeably better on this pair.

Thoughts After Using

Still going strong.  It’s nice to have these to compare to the sound coming out of the laptop speakers.

I think there are some sound engineers who like to do a final mix on a nice set of monitors, but also on standard car speakers to see how it sounds to different sets of listeners.

Why I Chose It

This was another Craigslist find.  The other USB microphones I was looking at were the Snowball also by Blue and the Samson Go.

It was hard to pass this one up for only $40.  It is a little large, but I have a large backpack with plenty of space for it.

Thoughts After Using

Really like this microphone, but wasn’t able to use it for my first videocast.  Just way too sensitive in picking up ambient noise especially outdoors.

I’m part of the way through my second videocast right now, using this mic inside, so it will be interesting to compare the two.

Why I Chose It

This is on loan to me from someone I know.  I needed something to charge all my electronics and thermoelectric cooler.

I wish I could be more environmentally friendly and get a large solar charge, but I just can’t afford it right now.  Honda makes one of the best generators around, and I was surprised how quiet it is on eco mode.

Thoughts After Using

Was very impressed with the efficiency of this unit.  Fuel consumption obviously depends on what devices are being powered.

The manual says it gets about 8 hours from a 1/4 tank of gas on eco mode.  That’s probably with nothing hooked up, but I saw pretty close to that estimate.  My 2.5 gallon portable gas tank was enough to last me most of the time.
